The Group of 7
As a tribute to Tom Thomson and a desire to keep alive the style he pioneered, The Group of Seven was founded in 1920 by Canadian painters Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A. Y. Jackson, Franz Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald and Frank Varley. They sought to paint their native landscape in a distinctly Canadian manner.
The rocks, trees, and lakes of Canada's north became, for them, symbols of national pride and greatness and has continued to affect the way in which all Canadians today view their native land.
